Organic Glow

'Beauty & Body' Category Archive

Before finding Miessence in 2009, I had been running in circles trying to find organic skincare and bodycare that was truly…. ORGANIC! Every “organic” product I had tried in the past had either blurred the definition of “organic”, disguised synthetic ingredients and synthetic processing  as naturally derived or was using chemical preservatives. I wanted the peace of mind that came from buying organic food to translate into skincare and bodycare. Why is that so difficult?!

Having researched products since 2007, I now know what to look for… and its a lot easier than having to research each and every ingredient yourself. I want to show you the fast track to what you are looking for today and its as easy as looking for the same seals you recognize on organic food on your skincare or bodycare products.

My intention with this post today is to assist those of you who are researching for yourself. We do not intend to tear down or badmouth other brands but simply state facts by examining labels. The product formulations will be shown, alongside any certifications that the product has earned.

No matter what standard best meets your needs, the bottom line is that every consumer be educated on the options available. If you are looking to avoid endocrine disrupters, reproductive toxins and potential carcinogens completely, then food grade certified organic is the standard you seek. We hope to assist you in identifying products like Miessence who have created products to the food grade standard.

I’d like to thank our special guest Narelle Chenery, founder of Miessence, for her expertise in highlighting the synthetic and non-organic ingredients contained in these product formulations. Narelle has dedicated her career to upholding organic standards in the beauty industry and has created many helpful tools for educating consumers. As founding director and product formulator for Miessence, Narelle has educated and inspired thousands of people around the world on the benefits of certified organic products. Drawing on the ancient wisdom of herbalism and aromatherapy combined with organic food technology, Narelle created the world’s first certified organic skincare and bodycare in 2001. These products use the bounty of Mother Nature in a way that is respectful and sensitive to the planet. Now more than 10 years later Miessence has over 100 certified organic products for beauty, health, home and body sold in over 65 countries worldwide. Thank you Narelle!

Is Arbonne, Nutrogena Naturals, Burts Bees, Yes to Carrots, Pangea Organics, Avalon Organics, NYR Organics, Beyond Organic Skincare and Dr. Haushka Really Organic?

For our in-depth brand comparison we will be looking at individual cleansers and a individual moisturizers from each company. We will get into the ingredient and product claim details, but for simplicity’s sake I have posted the recap comparison chart below. If your definition of organic skincare and bodycare is that the product does not contain synthetic chemicals, does not synthetically process their natural ingredients and uses no chemical preservatives, NONE of these brands are truly organic. That is, except for Miessence…

As you can see from the comparison chart below only products that bear food grade seals on the product labels (such as USDA Organic, or Australian Certified Organic) meet the criteria of being untouched my synthetic chemicals, non-GMO and are organically preserved. Literally meeting the purity standards of organic food!

Miessence vs Arbonne, Nutrogena Naturals, Burts Bees, Yes to Carrots, Pangea Organics, Avalon Organics, NYR Organics, Beyond Organic Skincare, Dr. Haushka

Is Arbonne Organic?

As their website states in the company’s Ever Green Commitment, “at Arbonne we are all about being green – always have been and always will be”  and that “we’re taking pure, safe and beneficial to the next level“. So lets see how those claims stack up against the product ingredient lists.

Is Arbonne Organic

Arbonne RE9 Advanced Smoothing Facial Cleanser ($61.00 for 90ml)

Classification: NOT Organic / Guilty Greenwasher
The most concerning synthetic chemicals are highlighted although there are many ingredients in this product that are prohibited in organic certification.

Narelle’s Comments:

  • Looking at the top third of these ingredients 90-95% of this product is water, synthetic surfectants and ethyoxilated chemical compounds contaminated with known carcinogen 1,4 Dioxane from the manufacturing processes used to create the synthetics.
  • Highlighted are several suspect chemicals that are contaminated ethyoxilated ingredients, synthetic surfectants, chemical emulsifiers and a toxic preservative.

Arbonne RE9 Advanced Intenstive Renewal Serum ($81.00 for 30ml)
Classification: NOT Organic / Guilty Greenwasher
The most concerning synthetic chemicals are highlighted although there are many ingredients in this product that are prohibited in organic certification.

Narelle’s Comments:

  • Aside from water, the first ingredient listed, the most prevalent ingredients used in this product are silicone derivatives.
  • Silicone derivatives have shown toxicity to internal organs, they bioaccumulate which means that after each application they are stored in your organs and silicones are endocrine disrupters and neurotoxins.
  • Silicones also do not biodegrade, thus build and pollute our environment.

. Take a very close look at the labels of Arbonne’s Pure Vibrance Shampoo, Arbonne Pure Vibrance Conditioner, Arbonne Texturizing Mousse, Arbonne RE9 Advanced Regenerating Toner, Arbonne RE9 Advanced Smoothing Facial Cleanser, RE9 Advanced Intensive Renewal Serum and RE9 Advanced Restorative Day Creme. Afterwards Narelle answers a few questions in the chat box, including the surprising low cost of goods and enormous profit margins on these Arbonne products and she also explains why “derived from” ingredients in a label are always greenwashed synthetics.

Classification: NOT Organic / Substandard Organic Cosmetic Certification / Misleading Claims
The most concerning synthetic chemicals are highlighted, although there are many ingredients in this product that are prohibited in organic certification.

Narelle’s Comments:

  • Soil Association certification is a cosmetic certification that allows an array of synthetic surfectants, sulfates, emulsifiers and preservatives.
  • Cetyl alcohol, cetearyl glucoside, sodium hyaluronate, cetearyl olivate, sorbitan olivate are naturally derived, but synthetically processed emulsifiers and surfectants. Naturally derived does not mean the ingredient is natural. You can read more here Identifying “Semi Natural” Ingredients.
  • Confused by NYR’s claim of 95% organic ingredients? We are as well!!! Although we cannot find details on the Soil Association website, it is our guess that the Soil Association excludes the “allowed” synthetic emulsifiers and preservatives from the 95% calculation and only counts the actual natural plant extracts (not all of the ingredients). So of the plant extract ingredients, 95% are organic ingredients, but that says nothing about the purity of the entire formulation. With synthetics as the 5th and 7th ingredients and 7 more synthetics listed at the end of the ingredient list, its impossible that this formula is 95% organic.

Where Are You On Your Own Organic Journey?

I would love to hear your thoughts on this post. After years of research I happened upon the world’s first food grade certified organic skincare and bodycare line, Miessence. Immediately I recognized the line as the organic “product oasis” I’d been looking for! Since this skincare bore the seals of organic food (USDA Organic and Australian Certified Organic) I knew that the products had been produced to a standard with which I was familiar. The products are literally pure enough to eat!

Thanks again to Narelle Chenery! As an organic products formulator since the late 1990’s we appreciate your keen eye and fact based expertise!

Narelle Chenery of Miessence

Working with clients, I find myself asking some pretty in-depth questions in order to reveal their true skin type and match them with the appropriate organic skincare regime. The tricky part can be the types of ingredients a new customer is currently using on their skin. Did you know that synthetics or even chemically processed natural ingredients can strip skin of hydrating phospholipids, create dryness, spur an over production of oil, coat the skin with occlusive synthetic moisturizers and even cause chronic, low level irritation which leads to cellular breakdown and WRINKLES?! Yikes! If you are interested in reading more on this topic, checkout my prior post Hidden Ingredients May Be Aging Your Skin… or Worse!  Its quite possible the products you are currently using are creating skin conditions and masking your true skin type. Bottom line is that simply switching to a food grade certified organic line of skincare, like Miessence, is going to get you moving towards beautiful, glowing, balanced skin no matter what your skin challenges are currently.

How to best care for Normal Skin?

Normal skin is best supported with a range of emollients, stimulating, cold pressed plant oils, regenerating organic herbal extracts and soothing organic essential oils to support moisture retention, even oil production and antiaging. Normal skin types need nourishment to support the barrier function of the epidermis and sebaceous glands require equalizing over the different zones of the face, ie T-zone vs. cheeks. Diet is a main contributing factors to the appearance of skin for ALL skin types. Make sure you are eating a diet heavy in raw, organic vegetables and fruits, lots of healthy fats (butters, coconut oils, avocado, nuts and seeds) and that you are drinking lots of water.

Causes of Dry Skin

Dry skin is characterized by a lack of moisture caused by inadequate production of oil by the sebaceous glands. Dry skin can also be cause by too much sun, wind, washing with harsh synthetic cleansers, washing too often, using products that contain alcohol, diet, poor water intake/dehydration, excessive steaming of the skin and some medications.

How to Best Care for Dry Skin?

More than any other skin type, dry skin is more prone to aging and wrinkles. Avoid all skincare products and cosmetics that contain alcohol, facial steam products and strongly “drawing” clay masks or excessive exfoliation. A very mild, rich, emollient based cleanser is most appropriate for dry skin. Miessence also recommends topically applied phospholipids and fatty acids from a combination of plant oils and butters to restore  proper barrier function and increase hydration and sebum production. This is accomplished with a carefully selected blend of essential oils and herbs that foster regeneration of skin cells, strengthen connective tissues, assist in water retention and raising moisture levels in the skin. Diet is a main contributing factors to the appearance of skin for ALL skin types. Make sure you are eating a diet heavy in raw, organic vegetables and fruits, lots of healthy fats (butters, coconut oils, avocado, nuts and seeds) and that you are drinking lots of water.

Recommended Organic Product Regime for Dry Skin

Miessence recommends the Rejuvenating Skin Essentials Pack as the ideal regime for Dry Skin. These products combine high levels of lubricating, hydrating phospholipids and butters. Carefully selected organic herbs and essential oils will coax your skin into a more robust production of oil to encourage better hydration and combat premature aging with potent antioxidants to neutralize the free radicals that cause wrinkles. Frequent exfoliation is not recommended until the skin’s hydration levels are increased.

Causes of Mature Skin

Natural aging process. Mature skin can be characterized by moisture lost and advanced collagen cross linking which can be illustrated in wrinkles or facial lines.

How to Best Care for Mature Skin?

Goals are regenerating, tonifying and stimulating the skin. There is a need to exfoliate regularly to remove dead, dry surface skin cells to assist in cell turnover and oxygenating skin cells. Ingredients selected for this profile are circulation boosting, revitalizing and feature anti-free radical, anti-aging properties. Diet is a main contributing factors to the appearance of skin for ALL skin types. oily skin

Causes of Oily Skin

Characterization of oily skin is that it tends to form pimples, blackheads and clogged pores. Sebaceous glands produce too much sebum and the fatty tissue under the epidermis is very thick.

How To Best Care for Oily Skin?

Products containing alcohol must be strictly avoided, which strips the skin of all natural oils and causes the sebaceous glands to kick into over activity, resulting in more oil production. Goal will be to gently harmonize oil production of the sebaceous glands, NOT over cleansing or stripping. Exfoliation is fantastic for oily skin and should be done on a daily basis to remove dead skin, pollutants, oil and dirt in prevention of clogging your pores. Diet is a main contributing factors to the appearance of skin for ALL skin types. Make sure you are eating a diet heavy in raw, organic vegetables and fruits, lots of healthy fats (butters, coconut oils, avocado, nuts and seeds) and that you are drinking lots of water.

Recommended Organic Product Regime for Oily Skin

Miessence recommends the Purifying Skin Essentials Pack as the ideal regime for Oily Skin. These products combine carefully selected organic herbs and essential oils to balance the production of oil, purify the skin and cleanse thoroughly. Exfoliation at least once per week is highly recommended in order to stimulate skin turnover and prevent clogged pores.

Acne Prone & Blemished Skin Profile

  • Oily skin is the profile, but with an acne condition
  • Under the age of 30
  • Moderate to severe acne
  • Cystic acne, pimples and mild to severe blackheads
  • Tend to be under emotional stress

acne skin

Causes of Acne

Acne prone skin is characterized constant or reoccurring pimples and blackheads. Caffeine, alcohol and tobacco use can cause facial acne. Blemished skin can also be caused by hormonal changes or the result of a body that is not detoxifying well and is burdened with toxins erupting through the skin.

How to Best Care for Acne Prone & Blemished Skin?

In Chinese medicine skin problems are tied with poor health of the bowel. Paying special attention to good bacteria balance (theraputic grade probiotics), detoxification and nutrition. Eliminating caffeine, alcohol and tobacco. Diet is a main contributing factors to the appearance of skin for ALL skin types. Make sure you are eating a diet heavy in raw, organic vegetables and fruits, lots of healthy fats (butters, coconut oils, avocado, nuts and seeds) and that you are drinking lots of water. After toxins are eliminated and the internal system is rebalancing, then we can look at topical treatments for the skin. Strictly avoid any products containing alcohol, as that will overstrip the skin and cause an overproduction of oil. While researching and studying skincare ingredients for the last 6 years, one of the last pieces of the puzzle for me was an ingredient’s journey through manufacturing. It’s behind the scenes, it’s tough to uncover and it’s usually where a “faux organic” company hides its dark secrets and hidden ingredients.

I’ve comprised some tips I’ve learned along the way and how you, as an educated consumer, can make things very easy for yourself. Seek out 100% organic food grade skincare for the effectiveness of your products and the health of your skin.

Synthetics Can Cause Inflammation & Premature Aging

“Emulsifiers, preservatives and formaldehyde cause sensitivity and irritation, creating a domino effect where the body feels the need to protect itself through an inflammatory response,” says Palm Beach, FL, dermatologist Dr. Layne Nisenbaum.

Even more serious is the potential for inflammation related disease. Dr. Laura Koniver, Charleston, SC, shares “Its been found that by chronically irritating skin (at low levels – low enough that you don’t see any skin reaction visibly) you are chronically encouraging it to slough off and turn over new cells.  This is why low but consistent doses of retinal products, hydroxy acids and other skin acids, even all naturally derived fruit acids, works to give your skin a refreshed surface chronically forcing new cell turnover. While this is great in the short term (you get fresher skin within a few weeks) in the long term, chronic irritation and inflammation has been shown to incite cellular damage.  Chronic inflammation is turning out to be one of the major factors in all types of disease from coronary artery disease, to strokes, to cancer.”

Synthetics and naturally derived synthetics subtly irritate the skin, which may make it look “rosy”, “plump” and turn over new skin in the short term. But long term, this low level irritation triggers an inflammation response from the body. Its well accepted that chronic inflammation leads to free radical generation, cell damage, wrinkles and sagging skin. Or possibly even disease.

Your skincare ingredients could be aging you! So you need to be sure you know exactly the standards your ingredients uphold. Here’s where it can get tricky.

“Made With” Organic Ingredients

Its semantics on a label, but the difference in a certified organic product formulation versus “made with” certified organic ingredients is immense. Just because some of the ingredients are organic ingredients does not mean the entire product formulation is certified organic. Even if a majority of the product’s ingredients are certified organic, that doesn’t tell a consumer anything about the standards of the remaining ingredients. Be careful that you are looking at a product level certification, not an ingredient level certification.

Chemical Processing Taints Organic Ingredients

Significant differences occur in the processing standards of an uncertified “organic” product. Take for example Disodium Cocoyl Glutamate (from coconut oil). Sounds natural enough, right? Wrong.

To make this ingredient, you begin with raw natural coconut oil. Next comes the extraction process where the oil is separated out for use with petrochemicals and other chemical solvents. The extraction is followed by extensive processing and forced reactions with synthetic chemicals (usually several reactions with several chemicals), which transforms the ingredient until a foam boosting chemical surfactant is produced. This ingredient is being marketed as “from coconut” or “naturally derived” when it is no longer equivalent to coconut oil, but in actuality, is a synthetic creation. To put it simply, Disodium Cocoyl Glutamate (from coconut oil) does not grow on coconut trees.

Not only are semi-natural ingredients deceptive, but they also have potential health concerns. With extensive processing comes the problems of safety and purity associated with many synthetic chemicals, which is precisely what an organic consumer is trying to avoid.

Byproduct Contamination or “Hidden” Ingredients

When synthetic chemicals are introduced in the manufacturing of a natural source ingredient, it contaminates not only the purity of the ingredient, but the product as a whole. One example of this is known human carcinogen 1,4 Dioxane, which would not appear on a label as it is not an official ingredient, but can be present in the formula due to processing natural ingredients with synthetic chemicals.

Therefore, even if you are able to identify or nearly identify a product’s ingredients as all natural, you have no access to information on the ingredient’s processing. Processing ingredients with synthetic chemicals is strictly prohibited in a certified organic product so you have the guarantee of a purely organic formulation.

I’ve been reading about Beauty Balms in every national magazine this spring. The concept has been wildly popular in Asia and has now hit the US with American brands creating their own versions. But what are BB’s you say? Basically they are a type of foundation that plays double duty as skincare. Beauty Balms were originally designed to be used as aftercare for patients who had undergone cosmetic laser procedures.

Of all the brands mentioned, I didn’t see any organic or even natural Beauty Balms offered. So… I decided to review our Miessence Translucent Foundations using the skincare solutions that Beauty Balms claim to provide.

Checkout the full ingredient list of the Miessence Translucent Foundations. In the descriptions, you will find every single ingredient to be 100% beneficial to the skin and all are active in perfecting and protecting skin. I’m convinced we have the original Beauty Balm on our hands!

Moisturizer: Organic sunflower seed oil has a very high level of linoleic acid, which increases the moisture content of the skin (skin hydration is proportional to the level of linoleic acid in the skin). Formula also features organic jojoba seed oil which is a yellow liquid wax pressed from the bean of the desert Jojoba plant. The wax, similar to skin sebum, gives a silky smooth feel. Jojoba has excellent moisturizing and protective effects.

Sunscreen: The mineral Zinc Oxide brings coverage and a colorless base to our cosmetics, but its also the only sunblock ingredient that protects the skin against UVA1, UVA2, and UVB rays. You can find out more from the Skin Cancer Foundation website. Organic Shea Fruit Butter Shea Butter also brings moisturizing properties and provide light protection against UV rays of the sun.

Treatment: The base ingredient of our mineral foundation is Organic Aloe Vera juice which has been shown in recent studies to to accelerate cell (basal keratinocyte) growth in the skin, regenerating and speeding cell turnover. The formula also features Panthenol, which is the provitamin of pantothenic acid (vitamin B5). It improves the moisture-retention capacity of the skin and stimulates skin regeneration. Don’t forget Organic Lavender essential oil! It regulates sebum production, fosters the regeneration of new skin cells and soothes inflamed skin and smells divine.

Coverage: Most Beauty Balms say that when you wear them the need for foundation and concealer is less. That’s exactly how I would describe the coverage of Miessence Translucent Foundation. Its sheer, luminescent, perfectly blendable and natural looking in any light. Your skin, but better! For those who do like heavier coverage, Beauty Balms also serve as a great primer. Same with our Translucent Foundation. When I want a more “make up” look, then I layer the Mineral Foundation Powder and Concealer over the Foundation, adding until the perfect coverage is achieved.

Want to try an organic, multi-tasking Beauty Balm? Give our Miessence Translucent Foundation a try! You’ll love it!

Our friend Danika Carter, an Eco-Beauty Editor at Greenwala, posted a wonderful do it yourself recipe for organic Probiotic Hand Sanitizer using the Miessence BioPure Probiotic Concentrate. SUPER innovative, proven effective, safe and inexpensive! We thought this was too good not to share!

Using probiotics (good bacteria) topically makes a lot of sense. Unlike the alcohols used in hand sanitizers (even natural ones) probiotics are extremely gentle and non-drying, truly supporting healthy skin. If you think about it, bacteria is all around us, all over our bodies inside and out all the time. Its actually been estimated that the number of bacteria living in and on the average healthy human adult outnumbers human cells 10 to 1! So the goal to eliminate bacteria is a war you will not win. The goal should really be to have more good bacteria. This concept of bacteria being a numbers game (you want the good bacteria to outnumber the bad) is quite achievable and healthy. So why not destroy bad bacteria on your skin with a super strain of good bacteria (probiotic)?

In Danika’s article, she credits her friend Dani Abrahams with creating this recipe. Dani is a biological chemist and environmental toxicologist who “looks at blood work all day and really understands the effect synthetic chemicals in personal care have on people’s health”. When Dani was having trouble finding a non-toxic hand sanitizer, she decided to make her own. With her technical expertise and testing capabilities, she created a probiotic hand sanitizer with only three simple ingredients… all provided to us straight from mother nature. To make certain her recipe was effective, she tested it against germs and bacteria under the microscope and found it worked perfectly.

Dani’s Probiotic Hand Sanitizer Recipe

  1. Miessence BioPure Probiotic Concentrate (the “good” bacteria literally eats up the bad bacteria) If you are going to use a probiotic other than Miessence brand, be sure that the product does not need to be refrigerated. If the probiotic cannot survive without being refrigerated, then it will not be effective in your sanitizer.
  2. Purified Water (NOT tap water as the chlorine will kill the probiotic bacteria)
  3. Lemongrass Essential Oil (for scent and added anti-bacterial, anti-microbial, anti-fungal properties)

Combine 1/2 a cap full of the BioPure Probiotic Concentrate with 1/2 cup of purified water. Add a few drops of the lemongrass essential oil. Be sure to keep it to a few drops because Lemongrass is a potent oil – its even been shown in studies to be effective at killing the MRSA virus. If you plan on using the sanitizer on a child, you may want to switch out the lemongrass for lavender essential oil (a very gentle essential oil also with antibacterial properties that is super gentle and perfect for young or sensitive skin), or just use the BioPure and water alone.

One bottle of the BioPure will make more than 16 batches of sanitizer!

Dani also shared that you should make up small batches that you can use up quickly. Once mixed with water, the sanitizer will last about two weeks at which point you will need to discard any leftover and mix up a fresh batch.

The recipe smells absolutely amazing and we love how our skin feels soft and clean. Enjoy! Please let us know if you have any questions.

Beauty Editor Katherine Butler of EcoSalon, the conscious culture and fashion website, has ranked her seven favorite organic products for getting a safe, self tan this summer.

Among the winners is the Miessence mineral bronzer and blush. She writes, “For the ultimate in color, consider separately applying both a bronzer and blush. Some products are meant for blending, as are this bronzer and blush combo from Miessence via Organic Glow.com“.

The more well known natural moisturizing properties of fruit, nut and seed oils come to mind when we think about hydrating the skin. But what about flowers, specifically the rose? Rose oil has been used as a luxurious skin moisturizing treatment for many centuries.

Think about how water droplets will bead up on a rose petal…the reason is the petal’s soft wax which offers deeply hydrating benefits. So why isn’t rose oil used more commonly as a moisturizer? One reason is the extremely high cost of producing rose oil. It can take over one million blooms to produce 35 ounces of the highly prized Rose Damascena oil. Thankfully, only a very small amount of rose oil is necessary in skin preparations for amazing benefits.

Ready to give organic rose oil a try? Check out these two fabulous products:

Rose Monsoon Hydrating Mist, the award winning product created by Miessence is a fabulous mix of organic rose oil and organic rose water (the potent water, left behind after the distillation of the rose oil) used to provide instant skin hydration anywhere you need it. For mineral makeup users, this product is also ideal to set the powders and create a dewy complexion before heading out the door. Rose Monsoon can also come in handy in heated/air-conditioned environments which are so taxing on the skin. Smells so heavenly you’ll come up with any reason to use this spray!

The ultra-luxe facial Rejuvenating Moisturizer developed by Miessence especially for dry skin will leave your face silky soft, but never oily. Packed with vitamins, essential fatty acids, anti-oxidants and of course the lovely Organic Rosa Damascena Essential Oil (rose oil).

During medical school, Dr. Laura worked at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, MD with a research team who was investigating oncogenes.  We thought her take on cosmetic products and cancer was quite interesting.

Dr. Laura says: “I feel like I’ve gotten a little extra training in the areas of cancer research and in skin and my gut feeling says that the more you chronically irritate something, the more likely you are to develop cancer in that organ.  As straight forward as that.

Most of the over the counter anti-aging crap (um… I mean, *products*) you can buy through drugstores, department stores, and even health food stores, contain ingredients designed to chronically irritate your skin.  This is because they’ve found that by chronically irritating it (at low levels… low enough that you don’t see any skin reaction visibly) you are chronically encouraging it to slough off and turn over new cells.  This is why low but consistent doses of retinal products and hydroxy acids and other skin acids (even all naturally derived fruit acids) works to give your skin a refreshed surface… chronically forcing new cell turnover.
While this is great in the short term (you get fresher skin within a few weeks) in the long term, chronic irritation and inflammation has been shown to incite cellular damage.  Chronic inflammation is turning out to be one of the major factors in all types of disease… from coronary artery disease, to strokes, to cancer.

So, my goal as a physician is to decrease the levels of inflammation and irritation in and on the body as much as possible.  It is routine practice now to try and decrease the level of inflammation inside our bodies… for example, decreasing the level of inflammation in our guts by avoiding certain foods (like avoiding gluten if you have celiac disease) or using prescription medications to decrease inflammation (like statin drugs for heart disease)  But it is not generally addressed when it comes to skin care.

Yes, everyone understands that inflaming your skin to the point of sunburn is a serious no-no… that UV exposure can cause skin cancers… but what about the chronic irritation of the toxic chemicals in daily use of chemical sunblock?  This is starting to get more recent press and consumers are switching to physical sunblocks over chemical ones, for good reason.

The same goes for your facial care products.  Infrequent use may be fine, but daily (and sometimes twice daily, morning and night!) slathering on of anti-wrinkle, anti-aging, anti-this-and-that products intended to stir up your skin and cause enough low levels of irritation that it forces your skin to make new skin faster… 40 years of applying this to your face doesn’t seem right to me.

If you had a chemical irritant would you smear it morning and night on the inside walls of your heart?  Or along the surface of your kidney?  Why does it seem so much more benign when we slather it onto our skin?  I’m not sure why.

I do agree it seems less *invasive*.  But skin cancers are no small concern… and with the advent of the newer delivery methods (micronized particles and nanosphere delivery systems) the ingredients do not stay superficial at all anymore, but rather are internally delivered.  On top of that, and this is just my gut feeling, I truly believe that the chronic inflammation and irritation of the skin, while creating the immediate effect of quicker skin turnover, in the long term (decades later) this very chronic irritation can cause faster skin aging… as your skin reacts to being chronically irritated with visible signs of stress… uneven pigmentation, broken capillaries, seborrheic keratosis, actinic keratosis, and other age related changes.

So that is the platform upon which I recommend this very simple skin plan.  Do no harm.  Allow your body to do what it does best… cover you in sheets of beautiful, healthy skin, replacing it as needed… and support this process with moisture and occasional exfoliation.”

Well said Dr. Laura!!!
